Why it’s in the Showcase: The site has been using WordPress since the beginning which allowed it to scale rapidly as it gained in popularity. We have managed to stick with WordPress on one dedicated server through our huge spikes and stories going viral. The ease of WordPress has also allowed us to bring in over 50 writers so far and have them up and running in minutes.

Franc Roddam’s classic 1979 film version of Quadrophenia brought the alienation of 1960s British working-class youth to the big screen. Young Jimmy Cooper (Phil Daniels) divides his time between hanging out in London’s Mod cafes and working in the post-room of an advertising firm, a job that that lets him keep his scooter running and to pay for his tailored suits. Jimmy’s gang include Dave (Mark Wingett), Chalky (Philip Davis) and Spider (Gary Shail) and they spend most of their time trying to score ‘blues’ and chase girls like Steph (Leslie Ash) and Monkey (Toyah Wilcox). Through Jimmy we see the London Mod scene and the Mod vs Rocker conflict up close. To Jimmy, being a Mod a way of life, a community and a chance to be ‘someone’.

While just about any topic is possible fodder, the humor in FoxTrot tends toward the geeky, with occasional forays into the super geeky. FoxTrot began its published life April 10, 1988 as a seven-day-a-week newspaper strip. It started with about 70 client papers and creeped up to about 1000 at its peak. In 2007, I cut the strip back to Sundays-only in order to free up time for other things and to generally preserve what sanity I had left.
