The Children’s Radio Foundation is an initiative to give young people the tools and skills to express their ideas and share their stories, thereby giving them access to a world of wider opportunities. Since its founding by Elizabeth Sachs in 2006, the organization has created a network of more than 1700 trained youth radio reporters across six countries in Africa, who broadcast on local and national radio stations and via social media.

Why is it in the showcase?

The organization has an attractive website with great UX. It was able to do a lot of ground-level work during the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to its WordPress-powered site.

Marginal Revolution is the blog of Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok, both of whom teach at George Mason University. In numerous reviews and ratings over the years Marginal Revolution has consistently been ranked as the best or one of the best economic blogs on the web, but it is more (and less) than that, also representing the quirks of its authors.

Why it’s in the showcase?

Tyler and Alex (the founders) unleashed the power of WordPress to grow their project from a blog to a rich community of folks finding connectivity through the language of economics. The community has been able to leverage WordPress to evolve into a learning site that houses the largest online library of free economics education videos (over 900!).

The site runs entirely in WordPress and is integrated with AWS to deliver its resources, alongside an integration with Auth0 to issue secure user authentication.

MIT Sloan Management Review leads the discourse among academic researchers, business executives and other influential thought leaders about advances in management practice that are transforming how people lead and innovate. MIT SMR disseminates new management research and innovative ideas so that thoughtful executives can capitalize on the opportunities generated by rapid organizational, technological and societal change.

This site is a fully customized news portal for the University of Manitoba. The new site allows University staff writers and contributors to publish new, relevant, and fresh content—including photography, video and social media. The site is fully responsive so that it performs beautifully on desktop, laptop, tablet and smartphone.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The challenge was to design and build a digital newspaper that could fully replace the the University of Manitoba’s current printed paper, “The Bulletin”. Because digital consumption of news now far outweighs its traditional printed counterpart, they chose a scalable and flexible platform to go fully paperless.

Georgia State’s website represents its colleges and schools, centers of creativity and discovery, and provides visitors an opportunity to discover how Georgia State has a major impact on Atlanta, the nation and the world.

Why it’s in the Showcase: This is a very large university and gsu.edu is a single multi-site hosting over 150 sites.

Associated Students, Inc. serves as the official governing body of the Sacramento State University students and through operation and sponsorship of programs and services meets the varied needs of students.

Why it’s in the Showcase: This site is not only built responsively using a mobile-first design mentality, it also features the use of custom fields, unique styling, and social media integration that appeals to all age ranges.

Nicholls State University located in Thibodaux, Louisiana provides unique educational opportunities and services to the people in the heart of cajun country and beyond.

Why it’s in the Showcase: Nicholls has a multisite installation with a custom theme based on a custom parent theme using SASS, Suzy, and a variety of open source software to create a responsive website. The Nicholls website is collaborative with shared editing responsibilities across their programs and departments, and took advantage of WordPress’ ease of use to allow a small development team to meet their needs.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The Boise State University is an excellent example of using WordPress as an enterprise-class CMS. The theme is fully responsive and optimized for screen sizes ranging from smartphones to desktops. The global navigation and emergency notifications are managed centrally, and updates are pushed out to over 200 separate WordPress multisite instances within minutes.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The Perse School’s website is a robust use of WordPress as a CMS. The site features over 200 pages of content and uses featured images, a homepage slider, and form integration to create a full-featured website for the top-ranking school.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The UCF College of Medicine’s uses WordPress to create a website the emphasizes its high-tech learning environment. It features a custom theme, and customized backend to create a site that is easy to edit and maintain.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The University of Mary Washington site uses a WordPress Multisite installation with plugins created specifically to adapt to a multisite environment, custom post types to manage a document organization system and custom user roles for faculty and staff.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The Etownian is rated as one of the top college news sites in Pennsylvania, according to the Pennsylvania Newspaper Association. The site integrates the Livefyre commenting systems, social media, and a cleanly designed theme to engage students.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The site uses highly customized theme to create a powerful WordPress CMS providing a simple and intuitive environment for promoting the various programs and activities of the school. It uses a variety of custom post types and taxonomies on top of the standard pages and posts and multiple installations of WordPress to replace an archaic database of research work.

Why it’s in the Showcase: Drew University uses WordPress to fully power our over 140 sites across campus. The sites make extensive use of plugins and core functionality to provide a good experience for both users and editors.

Why it’s in the Showcase: BU Today migrated over 6,000 articles from a Drupal installation to our WordPress MultiSite installation. Every day that school is in session, a new edition is created that combines new content and relevant existing content. The order of all components is manually controlled, which provides editors with the power to control exactly how their content is presented on the homepage without having to fiddle with the publish date or classify the content in any particular way. When the edition is published, all associated drafts are also automatically published.

Why it’s in the Showcase: EIT showcases the custom content type features of WordPress 3.0, leveraging more than 6 custom content types, 1400 individual posts/pages/content types and countless amounts of post meta.

MU first offered up engineering excellence with a civil engineering class in 1849. Today, Mizzou Engineering excellence includes eight disciplines, 110 faculty members, 2,200 of the brightest undergraduates on campus and over 400 exceptional graduate students.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The University of Missouri College of Engineering uses a single network install of WordPress to host 5 of out of 7 of their academic departments. In addition, the site uses custom post types to create faculty pages that are organized by tags and provides a variety of content that is useful to both faculty and students. The site also pulls news using built in functions instead of MySQL queries.

Why it’s in the Showcase: Greek Schools’ network is the largest educational-focused BuddyPress installation in Greece. It currently has approximately 7,500 members and has the potential to grow much larger.

For more than 175 years, Lafayette has been known for a spirit of exploration that ignores boundaries, where faculty work with students across disciplines to tackle challenges and solve problems. The ability to make connections and think critically is paramount—on campus, off campus and after graduation.

Why it’s in the Showcase: Lafayette College’s well-designed, easy to navigate, and website is powered by WordPress and uses a variety of plugins and custom code to handle a wide range of content, from static content to photo galleries, and more.

Wheaton College is a private liberal arts college ranked among the top in the nation. Its beautiful New England campus is near Boston and Rhode Island.

The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy is a free, academic, peer-reviewed resource for encyclopedia articles on philosophical topics. It’s hosted at the University of Tennessee at Martin and edited by two philosophy professors, Brad Dowden and James Fieser.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The IEP has many readers, is a free academic resource hosted at a university, and has over 500 articles written by philosophers from around the world. The site was recently redesigned in 2009, and the university chose to move to WordPress from static HTML pages.

The new social media enabled site for the top 10 ranked Department of Management Information Systems, at the Fox School of Business, Temple University.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The Temple Fox MIS site applies WordPress MU and BudyPress to create an educational community in which close to a thousand members teach/take courses (as blogs), create personal e-portfolios (replacing student resumes), learn about and engage with each other (through BuddyPress), and aggregate their knowledge (through aggregated RSS feeds, e.g, of faculty research). The site uses WordPress MU and BuddyPress as a replacement for traditional websites, course management systems, portals, and traditional resumes to create an active open community. The KIPP Bay Area site is the central information point for the 7 Bay Area charter schools, covering information about each of the schools, enrollment and employment opportunities. KIPP is a national network of free, open-enrollment, college-preparatory public schools with a track record of preparing students in underserved communities for success in college and in life. There are currently 82 KIPP schools in 19 states and the District of Columbia serving around 20,000 students.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The KIPP Bay Area’s website is well designed, easy to use, incorporates Flash and Java Script animation, Google map integration, and unique main and interior navigation.

The University Lectures has brought to the Syracuse University campus and the Central New York community some of the world’s most dynamic, influential and inspiring movers and shakers. Previous guests have been world-renowned academicians, architects, designers, writers, business and media experts, and statesmen, who have all helped to shape the world in which we live.

Why it’s in the Showcase: This site uses WordPress as a publishing and historical record platform. The website takes advantage of WordPress pages for the content and uses posts for lecture events.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The homepage of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock runs entirely on WordPress. Developed and deployed by the University’s web services team, the new site is an excellent use of WordPress as a CMS. The site uses links to manage the top navigation elements, and tags and categories for news and events. The top header image and sidebar are both managed with posts.
