The Children’s Radio Foundation is an initiative to give young people the tools and skills to express their ideas and share their stories, thereby giving them access to a world of wider opportunities. Since its founding by Elizabeth Sachs in 2006, the organization has created a network of more than 1700 trained youth radio reporters across six countries in Africa, who broadcast on local and national radio stations and via social media.

The organization has an attractive website with great UX. It was able to do a lot of ground-level work during the COVID-19 pandemic thanks to its WordPress-powered site.

Tonal is an online service that has offers home-based personal health solutions. The service offers fitness coaches and artificial intelligence-based solutions for people to get a superior workout from their homes without having to visit a gym. Tonal is essentially an eCommerce platform built using WordPress.

Why is it in the showcase?

The Tonal site has a very quirky and attractive design and UX. The service itself is quite popular and successful. Tonal has raised $110 million and has seen its sales increase 12 times in 12 months.

Marginal Revolution is the blog of Tyler Cowen and Alex Tabarrok, both of whom teach at George Mason University. In numerous reviews and ratings over the years Marginal Revolution has consistently been ranked as the best or one of the best economic blogs on the web, but it is more (and less) than that, also representing the quirks of its authors.

Why it’s in the showcase?

Tyler and Alex (the founders) unleashed the power of WordPress to grow their project from a blog to a rich community of folks finding connectivity through the language of economics. The community has been able to leverage WordPress to evolve into a learning site that houses the largest online library of free economics education videos (over 900!).

The site runs entirely in WordPress and is integrated with AWS to deliver its resources, alongside an integration with Auth0 to issue secure user authentication.

The brand selected WordPress for its flexibility and scalability. It benefits from a block approach to allow the internal marketing team to create and edit content freely across the range of Hodge websites.

Why it’s in the Showcase: It was recently highlighted in a case study published by the Make.WordPress.org Marketing team.

Vogue is a globally recognized fashion and lifestyle magazine, published monthly by Condé Nast.

Why it’s in the Showcase: This is a great example of using a modern web app built with React and the WordPress Rest API.

By the end of the project, a large portion of the Capgemini network had been moved from Drupal to WordPress, undergoing a complex migration of 38 sites and content syndication across their local and main sites, as well as rebuilding their entire platform architecture.

The modern, upscale design puts a positive spin on the bullying epidemic by offering events, services and programs for children, teens, adults and schools.

This project took place during the biggest upgrade of the network in 150 years and it’s aim was to similarly upgrade the website to make it easier for users to find the service they are looking for.

The new theme that was developed greatly improved the UX of the site and the various custom user roles make it much easier for Network Rail to manage them internally. The new design layout is also far easier for users to navigate and the site is now responsive across all mobile devices.

This unique approach allowed us to work with their vertical imagery more efficiently and give life to the design. The site is mobile responsive complete with event calendar and social media integration.

Wil is widely recognized as one of the original celebrity bloggers, and is a respected voice in the blogging community. His blog WWdN has been voted “Best Celebrity Weblog” by Forbes.com, one of the 100 most influential blogs by C|Net, and “Weblog of the Year” in the bloggies. In 2009 Forbes named him the 14th most influential web celebrity. This is all amusing to Wil, who doesn’t think of himself as a celebrity, but is instead, “just this guy, you know?”

Why it’s in the Showcase: The challenge was to design and build a digital newspaper that could fully replace the the University of Manitoba’s current printed paper, “The Bulletin”. Because digital consumption of news now far outweighs its traditional printed counterpart, they chose a scalable and flexible platform to go fully paperless.

RosettaBooks is the leading independent eBook publisher, annually selling over 1,000,000 eBooks worldwide. The company launched in 2001 initially with a list of 100 preeminent backlist titles. Headquartered in New York City, today the company’s 500-plus title list includes leading back and frontlist titles, original short eBook lines and original digital-only titles across a broad array of publishing categories in fiction and non fiction.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The author and books are simply WordPress posts and they have many to many relations with each other. The entire catalog of authors and books are updated via a feed using a custom plugin. Bulk of the backend and frontend plugins/page templates are custom coded.

Georgia State’s website represents its colleges and schools, centers of creativity and discovery, and provides visitors an opportunity to discover how Georgia State has a major impact on Atlanta, the nation and the world.

Why it’s in the Showcase: This is a very large university and gsu.edu is a single multi-site hosting over 150 sites.

temple-news.com is the online extension of The Temple News, Temple University’s award-winning weekly student-run newspaper.

Why it’s in the Showcase: temple-news.com uses a responsive custom theme which presents its stories cleanly, with minimal distraction. The site was designed with ease of use in mind for both its readers and the editors who use it.

SwimSwam was founded in March 2012 and is now a very popular swimming website. They have interviewed everyone from Phelps to Lochte to Ders from Workaholics. The founders are all former swimmers including one Olympic gold medalist and they are all still heavily involved in the swimming community.

Why it’s in the Showcase: The site has been using WordPress since the beginning which allowed it to scale rapidly as it gained in popularity. We have managed to stick with WordPress on one dedicated server through our huge spikes and stories going viral.  The ease of WordPress has also allowed us to bring in over 50 writers so far and have them up and running in minutes.

Since, The Sartorialist has become one of the most popular fashion blogs on the web, and Schuman’s work has appeared in national advertising campaigns for The Gap, Verizon, Nespresso, DKNY Jeans, Crate & Barrel, Absolut, and many more. His work also resides in the permanent collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography.

Nicholls State University located in Thibodaux, Louisiana provides unique educational opportunities and services to the people in the heart of cajun country and beyond.

Why it’s in the Showcase: Nicholls has a multisite installation with a custom theme based on a custom parent theme using SASS, Suzy, and a variety of open source software to create a responsive website. The Nicholls website is collaborative with shared editing responsibilities across their programs and departments, and took advantage of WordPress’ ease of use to allow a small development team to meet their needs.
